Our DIY Tack Room - Pt1

So we recently completed a few building projects around the home farm, which happens to include a couple of rather purpose-built sheds. I thought it might be fun to document our efforts to deck out our new tack room to start with!

Here is the blank slate we are working with, 3.5m deep x 6m long. We have a nice glass sliding door and window on one side for plenty of light and a view into what will become the stables and wash bay. There's also an internal access door to the other garage that us ladies will not be using because it is the designated man-cave section - you can kinda see Syrax poking his head in because he's a nosy little squirt.

The Chinchilla Oak laminate flooring is ready to go down and the electrician is coming out this week to mark out where the power points and down lights are going to be installed. The plan is that along the short back wall we'll have bench space and cupboards, with room for the washing-machine and laundry sink. Under the window we'll be putting the feed storage trunk. And along that colorbond internal wall will be the saddle and bridle hanging space, with room for approximately 12 of each (we're collectors, can you tell?)

So, on the subject of saddle and bridle hanging - today we made a start by cutting to size what will be the saddle racks and bridle hooks. We stained the timber and painted the L-brackets too, going for that ol' retro feel - 'tis yet to be seen how successful that will be!

Tomorrow we are hoping to have the first row of saddle and bridle racks installed, intending for them to be either three high and four across, or two high and six across - but that will be determined once we've actually measured it out on the wall itself of course. I'm rather a fan of the whole utilitarian concept - not big on looks good but doesn't work, you know? And since I'm vertically challenged I don't know if I really want my saddles up where I can't actually get to them without assistance - cause that's just annoying!

Here's the afternoon's work for now - tomorrow we can actually make them look like something other than an odd assemblage of random pieces of wood and metal... Stay tuned!

Alas, there were no fittings the same colour as the saddle brackets I chose, so we paint!
Ready to get stuck into it tomorrow
